What should you do in the event of an accident?

In an auto accident, prioritize safety by checking for injuries and calling 911 if needed, then move vehicles to a safe location if possible and turn on hazard lights. After ensuring safety, call the police for a report, exchange information (name, contact, driver's license, insurance) with other drivers and witnesses, and take photos of the scene and vehicles. Finally, seek medical attention as soon as possible, even if you feel fine, and report the accident to your insurance company.

1. Ensure safety and call for help

  • Check for injuries to yourself, passengers, and others involved. If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately. Do not move an injured person unless there is an immediate danger, like a fire.
  • If the accident is minor and no one is hurt, move vehicles out of traffic to a safe spot. Turn on your hazard lights.
  • Call the police to file a report, even for minor accidents. This is important for insurance purposes and to document the incident.

2. Exchange information and document the scene

  • Get the following information from all other drivers involved: name, address, phone number, driver's license number, and insurance information.
  • Get the names and contact information of any passengers and witnesses. Ask for their version of events and write it down before they leave.
  • Take photos of the vehicles (especially license plates and damage), the overall accident scene, skid marks, and any relevant signs or property damage.

3. Follow up after leaving the scene

  • See a doctor for a medical evaluation soon after the accident, even if you don't feel hurt. Some injuries may not be immediately apparent, and a delay in treatment can harm your case and your health.
  • Notify your insurance company of the accident promptly. They will need to conduct their own investigation to help with your claim.
  • Do not discuss the accident with anyone else besides the police, your doctor, and your insurance company. Anything you say could be used against you later.
